Three top tips on being a better salesperson

Have you mastered your sales skills?

If you run your own business, then you have lots of different areas to focus on. From dealing with your financial advice clients to making sure that your marketing efforts are on point, your to-do list is endless. One item that should be at the top of it is your sales technique.

The chances are that if you run a small or medium-sized business, then you will be directly involved with sales. Even if you have a larger company with a sales team, you will still need those same sales skills to network effectively at the top level.

Which characteristics do the top salespeople usually have?

  • The ability to listen
  • Superb people skills
  • Empathy
  • Passion
  • Confidence
  • Belief in product

The above are the most common personality traits that you will find in all good salespeople. The amazing thing is that anyone can develop them, although some basic traits should be inherent. If you do not have a passion for what you do and a belief in the product that you offer, then you will struggle in business.

You can work on the other traits so that you can get better at sales. Confidence, for example, will come with simply making more sales, and listening is as easy as letting the customer do the talking.

How can you improve your sales technique?

If you think that you have the necessary traits to sell effectively but need more specific advice on how to take it to the next level, then read on:

  • Build a connection first – When you begin to interact with customers, take the time to notice and comment on something unique about them. It could be their vibrant hair colour or the model of smartphone that they have in their hand. The key point is for you to build a rapport that makes it easier to sell to your customers later.
  • Sell value – You must always try to find the value in your product that will make it truly useful to someone. General product descriptions are not the ticket here – you must target a specific need of the person whom you talk to that your product will solve. When you do this, selling to your customers is simpler.
  • Be straight – Customers will spot it a mile off if you are not being 100% honest with them or trying to sell them a certain product, come what may. They will respond much better if you are straight with them and give them honest advice that they feel they can believe in. These people will then be more likely to buy from you because of the trust that you have built up.

Hopefully, these tips will give you a few ideas on how to boost your sales technique and see more money come rolling in.
